Shipping from Taicang to Cuba

One vessel a month loads at Taicang and crosses to Mariel in Cuba. Taicang stands at the mouth of the Yangtze, a short barge run from the densest export region in China, and the ocean leg is 45-50 days from the last Chinese port. Below we set out the sailing schedule, what the transit is made of, and what a Taicang load costs you.

The service, in short

One vessel a month calls at one or two Chinese ports and crosses to Mariel. Your goods are loaded at Taicang, stay on the same vessel all the way across, and are discharged in Cuba. The ocean leg is 45-50 days measured from the vessel's last Chinese call, so the arrival date depends on where on the coast you loaded — and the inland leg that gets the goods to the port depends on where your factory is.

Transit from Taicang
49-61 days

Gate-out to container release in Cuba, including the inland leg, the ocean crossing and Cuban clearance.

Inland collection
1-3 days

The cheapest inland leg on this service for most of the cargo we move here, because the factory belt sits inside the barge catchment. The trade against the southern ports is sea time: cargo loaded here is on the water before the vessel has finished the rest of the Chinese coast run.

One vessel a month, and it calls at one or two Chinese ports before it puts to sea.

Booking window
30 days ahead

Thirty days ahead is the routine booking window. On this sailing the space that goes first is the electronic and furniture cargo committed early in the month, not the booking window itself.

  • Booking and cut-off

Out of Taicang the cut-off is the easiest on this service to hold, because the barge and short-haul schedule leaves us more working days to close the export file before the vessel arrives.

  • Collection to the port

Out of the Suzhou-Wuxi-Changzhou belt this is mostly a short truck to a riverside depot and then a barge down the Yangtze to the terminal.

  • Inland haulage

From Suzhou the run to Taicang is short enough to be a same-day delivery; from Wuxi, Changzhou or Nantong it is a longer road leg to the same depot.

The Loading Port

Taicang, on the Yangtze estuary below Suzhou

Taicang stands on the south bank of the Yangtze estuary, roughly thirty kilometres downstream of Suzhou and immediately below the Kunshan hinterland. What matters commercially is not the size of the port but its position: it is the seaward end of the densest export region in the world, and the river gives it a collection radius that no coastal port further south can match.

The river does the collection

Because Taicang sits on the Yangtze rather than on the open coast, cargo from Suzhou, Wuxi and Changzhou reaches the terminal by barge instead of by road. That is cheaper per tonne, it removes most of the road kilometres that make inland collection expensive further inland, and it is why the inland line on a Taicang quotation is often the smallest one we write.

Electronics and furniture, in the same sailing

The Suzhou-Wuxi-Changzhou belt produces both high-value electronic components and high-volume flat-packed furniture, and they are the two cargoes that fill a sailing cleanly. Where a northern lane leans on appliances and a southern lane leans on consumer goods, this lane carries technical cargo and home goods together — which is why the monthly slot holds space year round rather than in seasonal bursts.

A middle-of-the-run call, and that is the point

Taicang is neither the first nor the last Chinese call, so the container stays on the vessel while it works the coast in both directions. That adds a few days against a southern load and saves several against a northern one, and it is why a customer in Suzhou rarely needs to think about which call their cargo is on.

Why Taicang

Taicang is the closest port to the densest export base in China

Within a hundred kilometres of the Taicang terminals sit Suzhou, Wuxi, Changzhou, Kunshan and Nantong — together the largest concentration of export manufacturing in the world and the source of most of the cargo we load here. Because the plant and the quay are that close, the inland leg is measured in hours rather than days, and a container can be at the terminal the morning after it leaves the factory gate. What you give up against the northern ports is nothing on the water: Taicang is still in the middle of the coast run, so the sea time to Mariel is the same 45-50 days.

Industrial Belts

What actually ships out of Taicang

The Taicang lane is the outbound lane for the Yangtze Delta manufacturing belt, and the clusters around it are closer together than anywhere else in China. That matters practically: a shipment can draw its cargo from three towns in one day, which is why the consolidation economics here are better than the distances suggest.

Inland Collection

How the cargo actually reaches Taicang

This is the shortest collection radius on the service, and it is the reason the inland line on a Taicang quotation is usually the smallest. The plants are close enough that the collection method is a decision, not a negotiation.

Common Cargoes

What runs out of Taicang, and what to watch

These are the cargoes we move out of Taicang most often. Listing them is not a promise that we take everything — some categories are restricted at destination, and we would rather tell you before you book than after the container is on the vessel.

Electronic components & devices

The signature load on this lane, and the reason the port is on the service: high value density, low weight, clean cartons that stow without dunnage.

Note · Lithium batteries and magnetised materials are handled as Class 9, and the MSDS has to be filed before booking.

Solar modules & inverters

Flat-stacked and uniform from the Wuxi and Changzhou cluster, so it loads in one pass and needs almost no dunnage.

Note · Modules need moisture packing to the carrier specification; inverters with batteries are declared as dangerous goods.

Flat-packed furniture & homeware

Fills the volume on this lane, and a clean full container with nothing loose — the cheapest kind of cargo to move once it is packed.

Note · Furniture needs moisture protection and strapping, and the packing must be rated for a long sea passage.

Textiles, bedding & garments

Baled and carton-folded out of Wujiang, Changshu and Nantong, filling the container floor to the roof.

Note · Fabric needs moisture and pest protection — desiccant or fumigation is standard on this lane.

Machinery, moulds & tooling

CNC equipment, dies and mould bases out of Kunshan, heavy enough that some of it leaves a standard container on a flat rack.

Note · Out-of-gauge pieces must be declared for size and weight before booking, and the securing plan is agreed with the carrier.

Medical devices & consumables

Small volume, very high value, so it usually travels LCL or shares a container — light on the cargo and heavy on the file.

Note · Temperature-sensitive items need a declared temperature range before we quote.

Kitchenware & hardware

Stainless and household hardware from the Changshu direction, dense and clean-stowing.

Note · Anything with a battery is handled as Class 9, and polished surfaces need protection against scuffing in transit.

Auto & motor components

Drive assemblies, motors and wiring harnesses out of Wuxi and Changzhou, usually mixed with lighter electronics in the same container.

Note · Glass and electronic parts must be moisture-protected, and the battery content has to be declared.

FAQ

Shipping from Taicang to Cuba, answered

Is there a direct sailing from Taicang to Cuba?

Yes — the monthly service goes straight to Mariel. The vessel calls at one or two Chinese ports on the way, and your goods load at Taicang and stay on board through the other calls, with no transshipment. The quotation states the actual sequence of calls and the arrival date.

Should I load at Taicang, or at another Chinese port?

Taicang is the right port when your supplier is in the Suzhou-Wuxi-Changzhou belt, in Kunshan or in Nantong, because the run to the water is short and the cargo travels on a barge rather than a truck. If your supplier is in Zhejiang or further south, a Taizhou or Guangzhou load shortens the run further; we quote the Taicang option and the southern option side by side before you commit. On most cargo the difference is a handful of days either way, so the decision usually comes down to inland freight cost and which port has space on the sailing you need.

FAQ

Loading at Taicang, answered

How long does a Taicang load take to reach Mariel?

The ocean leg is 45-50 days from the last Chinese call. Cargo loaded in Taicang stays on the vessel while it works the other Chinese ports on that sailing, so the total from your gate is a few days longer than the sea figure alone — 49-61 days door to door, which is the shortest inland leg on the service. We quote that total, not just the ocean leg.

Why should I load at Taicang rather than further south?

If your factory is in Suzhou, Wuxi, Changzhou, Kunshan or Nantong, Taicang is normally the answer: the barge run from those plants is short and cheap, and the sea time is the same as any southern port. The case for loading further south only holds when your supplier is actually in Zhejiang or Guangdong, and we quote both so the numbers decide.

How does cargo reach the terminal from Suzhou?

Mostly by barge down the Yangtze from a riverside depot, with a short road leg from the factory to that depot. That is why the inland line on a Taicang quotation is usually small: the distance is short and the water does the heavy lifting. We confirm the collection method at quotation stage because on heavy cargo it moves the total cost more than the ocean rate does.

Can you ship project or oversized cargo from Taicang?

Yes, within limits. Machine tools, dies, mould bases and pre-fabricated plant travel as flat rack or breakbulk, and the dimensions and weight have to be declared before the booking so the carrier can confirm the slot and the securing plan. This is a routine arrangement on this lane rather than an exception to be negotiated.

What documents do electronic and battery cargoes need?

Anything containing lithium is shipped as Class 9 and needs the MSDS, a packing certificate and the battery watt-hour calculation filed before booking rather than after. On this lane that file is usually the long pole in the documentation schedule, which is why we ask for the product list before we quote rather than once the container is booked.
